Drywall in Comfort, and the Walls That Belong to Another Trade

What a drywall repair in your house usually involves

Less than you'd expect, most of the time. The wall around the damage is nearly always sound, and sound wall stays where it is. We cut the damaged board back until we reach something firm for a new piece to land against, screw that piece in level with what's around it, then tape and coat the joint. On a wall somebody has knocked through, the part that comes out is often no bigger than a dinner plate.

Compound has to dry hard before the next coat goes over it, so a single repair in your house is usually two short visits instead of one long stretch. That's the material behaving the way it does, and there's no way to push it along that doesn't show up later. Nobody has to be home for the middle of it.

The finish, which is where the day actually goes

Most repairs give themselves away at the edges and not in the middle. So matching the texture is only half of it, and the other half is how far out that texture is carried once it's matched. On a long wall, blending a hole the size of your hand can mean working a good stretch to the left and right of it, and that's deliberate rather than fussy.

If your walls are smooth instead of sprayed, the same idea applies with a trowel in place of a gun, and it takes longer. Either way you'll see what we're matching to before any of it goes on the wall, and if it isn't right yet we'd sooner find that out on a spare piece of board.

None of that is quick and none of it is complicated either. It's a matter of getting each coat on properly, letting it dry, and then looking at the wall in the light of your own room before anybody calls it finished.

That one is usually older than it looks, and it's the call we get most in Comfort after the repairs and the knocks. Once the leak itself is fixed, the marked board comes down, new board goes up, and the ceiling gets finished back across so it reads as one surface. If the board underneath turns out to be sound and only the paint is marked, that's a smaller job, and the smaller job is the one you'll be priced for. You'll know which of the two it is before anything comes down.
